A good piece of drama set in post Pinochet Chile. It's been on my list of works in translation that I have wanted to read for quite some time. It's actually quite a quick read. A good character study that gets into the psychology of both the victims and perpetrators of crimes.

It fascinates me (in a dark sort of way, Ill admit) when people who have been through something terrible have to find a way to live alongside the ones who committed terrible crimes against them. After the Holocaust, the Rwandan Genocide, Apartheid, and other crimes against humanity, there were so many criminals that it wasnt possible to just through them all in prison or have them executed. In Ariel Dorfmans wrenching play, Death and the Maiden, we see a trio of people faced with the impossible

It took me three days to read these short 76 or so pages? Yes, because I needed to pause overnight between the Acts of the play to absorb and settle down, the story was so intense. I caught the film starring Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, and Stuart Wilson many years ago on telly and have never forgotten it. Reading the play all these years later did not disappoint.

A friendly stranger helps you with his car. You invite friendly stranger. Your wife recognises "friendly stranger" as the man who was involved her rape/torture. Who do you believe? The friendly stranger or the traumatic wife? Death and the Maiden refers to the quartet composed by Schubert with quick allusions in the play. It was a really short play, barely took a day to read. I really enjoyed the perception of truth and belief presented in the play. It was an enjoyable quick read, analysing it

A play that centers around reasoning and lies. Its gloomy as the play consists of only three characters. The play deals with the struggles of torture and sexual assaults that one of the characters has experienced in the past. One of the overarching themes of this play is justice and reconciliation. The play is an amazing read, short, and quick to the point.

I feel like something was missing from this, but that's most likely because I saw the movie first. If I had read this first, I probably would have enjoyed it more because I wouldn't be comparing it to the movie. I feel like this could have been a little longer. It wasn't quite as impactful as the movie and it somehow felt less emotional.
