Commentary Epithetical Books Selected Poems, 1956-1968
Like many other people I'm sure I initially picked this up because I recognized the author's name through the line "give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld" from the Nirvana song "Pennyroyal Tea." I believe it was purchased from the local library for about 50 cents at most. I generally like Leonard Cohen's work but everything I've read and listened to falls short of the lyrical and musical quality of his first album.

Thank God it's over. I only finished this out of guilt because he had to go and die on me as I was reading it.It wasn't good.I mean, you like breasts, I get it. I like breasts too. At a certain point you tried to insult your audience. But no, I didn't find that thought interesting. In fact, your poetry pretty much sucks.I still like Suzanne and will never stray from that. Most likely. It's a good song (and Judy Collins performs it well). But geez, get a grip, your various lovers aren't that

Just look at the titles of the books in this collection- it makes my heart melt: "Let Us Compare Mythologies"- I think of this whenever I meet someone special. "The Spice-Box of Earth"- The aromatic smells from deep within a needed rest. "Flowers for Hitler"- Destruction is part of humanity. "Parasites of Heaven"- Struggling to find G-d but somehow it seems to be more consuming than productive. "New Poems"- New! Let's go shopping.

I used to carry this in my backpack in college. Cohen was one of my first touchstones along the path to becoming a writer. So, after reading Sylvie Simmon's new, grand bio of the man I went back and re-read all of "Selected Poems, 1956-1968." I relished again the stuff I loved 30+ years ago and I also found new things in there that I must have skipped back in the day, including a wonderful one act play. O God, make me poor enough/to love your diamond in the rough,/or in my failure let me see/my

Leonard Cohen died earlier this month; which reminded me that he had, like Bob Dylan whom I've been reading since he won the Nobel Prize, been one of my favorite singers when I was in high school back in the 1960's. I can still remember fifty years later the night I first heard "Suzanne" on the album station from Hartford and was totally blown away. By good luck, I discovered these two books (this and The Spice-Box of Earth while unpacking my book boxes in my garage this week (I'm still looking
