Welchs best friends, lives with his dad ,who is an excellent parent, though he is not wealthy or sophisticated like Sports mother. Early in the story, Sports grandfather passes away, leaving Sport a significant sum of money. This prompts his mother to become suddenly interested in her sons well-being and she begins trying to gain custody of Sport in place of his dad. When she doesnt get her way right off the bat,This was a favorite of mine as a kid and I was reminded of it recently, so it seemed time for a re-read. Like Harriet the Spy, the writing is engaging and focuses on the things kids notice: shoes, adults' sincerity, food. Harriet the Spy was a childhood favorite.
I loved Harriet the Spy when I was a kid, but man I FLIPPED for this book. I can still see the blue library copy I must've read a dozen times.
Sport (1953) is Fitzhugh's darkest of the Harriet trio. Kidnapping, custody issues, ugly racial tensions between police and the neighborhood, n-word two times. It's also the first book I read, and until this year, the only one I read of the trilogy. I still really enjoy it, and now that I'm older, the concept of a mother kidnapping her own son for custody and money no longer seems so farfetched and the idea of Sport parenting his own father seems even more tragic. I loved all the "Harriet the Spy" books when I was ages 11-12. I know I read this in April 1985 because I mentioned it in my journal from that time.
I think I started Sport in fifth grade because I loved Harriet the Spy so much but was turned off by the first chapter, where Sport's cartoonish rich mother is interacting with him. She is over the top and reminiscent of Beth Ellen's mother in The Long Secret. So now I decided to read it as an adult and give it more of a chance, and it was an interesting book with the same feel of the others.
