A solid commentary on the embedded narrative of Cupid and Psyche. Kenney's commentary is thematic rather than grammatical, so novices should look elsewhere. There is a facing-page translation, but it should be used to corroborate understanding rather than guide it. It has a thorough bibliography.Kenney's focus is on the applicability/allegory of the myth in a Platonic framework, and I would have appreciated a longer discussion of that in the introduction and an investigation of the variousshows the whole story behind Cupid and Psyche's love affairs but not entirely in full detail. the Golden Ass part was also unnecessary. It would have worked if they showed the relation of the story to the story of Cupid and Psyche.

the story of love and the human soul, preserved by divine will...i believe that this story is far more ancient than apuleius' probable retelling - eros/cupid and psyche are also mentioned in the nag hammadi library, in "on the origin of the world" - the first rose is said to have been borne of psyche's blood upon losing her virginity to her eros. this pair appear in greek art dating back to the 4th century bc, attesting to the ancient stream of thought this story originates from. what resonates
