Description Supposing Books

it's a novel about real life of widows and orphanI really loved this story .I read it first when i was 12 and i donot understand it but after 3 years i read it again .And realy I felt like i live this story.
Review of Naguib Mahfouz, The Beginning and the EndI read this as a political economy novel, but in a very subtle one. Most novels by Third World writers have something to do with either a direct encounter with Westerners or the indirect but total engagement with modernity. While both these elements are present in this novel, they are far in the distance. Instead, Mahfouz foregrounds poverty. He does so, however, by giving his characters rich inner lives and placing them within a complex social

Four passions drive the plot of this book, a realistic and linear narrative by the Arab worlds greatest novelist. The book tells the story, set in the mid-1930's, of a middle class Cairo family hit by a recent misfortune. The passions are those of the four children approaching young adulthood. If the genre is realism, an unmistakable tinge of naturalism also infuses this tale. The Freudian idea of human "drives" fascinated writers at the time, including Naguib Mahfouz. As the story develops, the
Very heavy going. Partly because of the serious subject matter (this is tragedy writ large, if in a small arena) and partly because of the language. The more Arabic literature I read, the more obvious it becomes that translating must be a real challenge, and few people are up to the task of making it sound natural in English. It's a tribue to Mahfouz's original that, despite his translator's frequently jarring choice of expression, there is still so much life in this book.Notwithstanding the
My first read for the Nobel-prize winner Naguib Mahfouz, I really enjoyed Mahfouz's writing style but ironically (since it's called the beginning and the end) I enjoyed the beginning a lot and hated the end.The story follows a poor Egyptian family who lost their father to a heart attack, he left behind a wive, 3 sons Hasan, Hussien, Hassanien and one daughter.I found the characters very selfish and self-absorbed each thinking of their own needs (view spoiler)[ , I don't know who is the worst ,
Enjoyed the book & made me think about some of the things I saw in Egypt in 2010. Easy/quick read. Another "not a feel good book" trials & tribulations, terrible poverty. Many decisions & words based on what people would think or in cases that factor ignored. The family had it all personality wise from the extreme sacrificing for the good of all to the extremely selfish. Mom / Dad / 3 sons and a daughter. Interesting conversations with what being said being the opposite of what was
